About
After years of working as an environmental scientist, I am drawing and painting. In some ways, I experience the process of painting as similar to science: it is tactile, material, and exploratory. But mostly, it’s an effort to communicate the magic of the visible world, and if I’m lucky an interesting picture with a bit of a personal twist happens.
I work from observation. I am fascinated by the impossible contradictions of conveying space on a flat plane; of using paint for light; and dealing with the fleeting, dynamic nature of visual perception by means of the static, unchanging object that is the end result of painting.
Lately I have been focusing on still life, especially flowers. Flowers are alive, move a little, open up and wilt--somehow these changes free me a bit from trying to make a “realistic” painting and paradoxically the result can be more true to perception.
